7.2.2 Subjects and Topics

Another way to describe the context of computer experimentation is to look at its subjects and topics. Because there are already a plethora of debates concerning experimental computer science, examples may be drawn straight from the literature. Denning [46] mentioned research on memory rules in time sharing and research on queuing networks in his overview of computer science experiments. Freeman [60] provided instances of a robot competition, data-intensive supercomputing research, and future network architecture research. Feldman and Sutherland [56] incorporated sophisticated computer applications. Gustedt et al. [95] emphasized research on grid computing, parallel computing, large-scale distributed systems, and several other large-scale computing initiatives. Software engineering and high-end computers were suggested by Basili and Zelkowitz [10]. Nature, according to several writers ranging from Chaitin to Zuse [16], calculates. In the end, the subject itself is unimportant. Any subject may be researched scientifically, and many can be researched experimentally.
